CLOSED - Paid young person advisor role open in the lab

  • 1 day per week for 6 weeks at £12 p/h
  • Applicants must be UK residents aged 18 or over, with right to work
  • London, UK/Remote

We are the Development and Environment Research Group at King’s College London, and we are looking to recruit a Young Person Advisor to help produce and disseminate our new podcast series. We have an exciting opportunity for the Young Person Advisor to work with us and advise on the content of the podcast. In each episode of the podcast, we will discuss a news headline on youth mental health (e.g., “Increased social-media use damages mental health”) and interview a researcher in the field to determine whether there is evidence to support the headline. We need the expertise of an enthusiastic, young person (age 18-24) who is passionate about science communication, interested in mental health and is looking to gain experience in podcast production and science communication. Young people with lived experience of mental health issues are also encouraged to apply.

The advisor will work directly with our Post-Doctoral Researcher, Dr Kathryn Bates, based in the Department of Psychology, Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience, King’s College London. You will assist in conducting a focus group with young people, advise on the content of the podcast episodes and help devise a dissemination strategy for the podcast series. While 1 day a week is preferred, the hours can be flexible depending on your other commitments. Please note that pay will be in the form of a one-off payment at the end of the consultancy.

We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Global Majority background, as well as people who identify as gender nonconforming.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize a focus group with young people to determine podcast topics
  • Assist in producing the podcast series: deciding on interviewees and planning content
  • Assist in devising communication strategy to disseminate the podcast

About you:

We’re looking for a young person (aged 18-24) with a demonstrable interest in youth mental health and science communication. You should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with team members and accept and use supervision and feedback effectively
  • Experience in using social media for science communication is desired but not essential

How to Apply:

Please email Kathryn with a CV and a short cover letter (max 1 page) outlining your interest (why you want to apply and the relevant experience you have) by 1st April 2022. Any queries or questions can also be directed to Kathryn: kathryn.2.bates@kcl.ac.uk
